On May 1, 2023, new measurement regulations for the petroleum sector came into effect in Norway. The new regulations are mainly a continuation of the old regulations, with updated provisions and guidelines for the measurement of oil and gas.
The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) aimed to simplify and clarify the rules by updating the regulations. One of their objectives was to align the new regulations as much as possible with the European Union’s Measuring Instruments Directive (MID).
The new measurement regulations are expected to increase predictability for the industry and enable more efficient supervision by the authorities (NPD). The industry will have a transitional period where decisions made under the old regulations will apply until they are either repealed or amended by the NPD.
The new measurement regulations apply to all petroleum activities on the Norwegian continental shelf and will be enforced by the NPD. The regulations will contribute to ensure more accurate and reliable measurements of oil and gas.
